three years ago today

Three years ago today I arrived in Victoria after 6 months of travelling in South America with only my 65L backpack in tow. I was only supposed to stay for the rest of the summer, and then summer turned into fall, and here I am 3 years later. 

The majority of people that I’ve met while living on the island have told me a similar story. “I was only supposed to stay for 8 months and now it’s been five years,” and so on and so on.

Vancouver island is a truly magical place, from the big trees dripping in moss, to the salty smell of the ocean that hits your nose as soon as you step off the airplane, to the unique gulf islands, rustic beaches, and communities, to the alpine lakes, hidden waterfalls, and wildlife. It’s truly no mystery to me at all why people arrive here and end up staying longer than anticipated, eventually putting down roots and calling the island home. 

I will miss it all.

And, I am so deeply excited to go home.
